This is an unofficial music video for Dream Theater's "The Shattered Fortress". Also it's my graduation work.

5 of my drawings were mainly used for narrative and many other small pieces to reinforce it. As I mentioned at the end of the video, a few of the images were downloaded from the web, and then modified or retouched to fit this video.

Conquest

Ok...Just wanted to play around for a while. Mixed Disney's "Lion King" with The White Stripes' "Conquest". Which means, I don't have any copyrights or whatsoever. Matter of fact, I hope this doesn't violate any copyrights of Disney or The White Stripes. It's just nothing(and I know that nobody is gonna check this vid).

Main intension was to experiment images and pixels. And I'm not sure what I was gonna experiment with them. So let's just fuck it. It is still just a play.

A Scene of That Day

A description of my imagimary doomsday. Sometimes in my dream, I see a crimson sky, blackened shapes and people talking and wandering. It may be a war scene, or a scene of doomsday. I don't know.

Early in this april, it snowed like hell. Since that day was so cloudy, it didn't look pretty but very misty and desperate. So I took the scene and decided to make a very dark, vicious video.

Sounds in this vid are backwarded and slow down. All of them are songs from certain musicians.

This is kind of stepping back...but it didn't work out that well.

I'm a bit disappointed that couldn't finish this stupid vid as I expected in many ways. It's way too long (I even cut out 30 seconds of this song but it's still too long. I'm not blaming the song though. I love it), and that makes this vid boring. And in the point of creativity, there's nothing new. I call this as "step back", but still this is nothing but a mixture of my former two vids.
And lastly, I tried a plug-in called "Toonit" by Red Giant and it was too heavy for my computer. Exporting took 7 hours only to cause a crash in Premiere CS3(I know...there can be many many factors for this).

There can be some positive points in this one too though. First, I like the compositions of layers in a few cuts. Since I only used "mirror" and "replicate" effects, 3-4 different layers in a cut have not-so bad unification.
Transparency between layers also worked out great(IMO).
And in some cuts, this vid look fantastic(IMO).

I don't think I might be trying another SYNCHRONIZE-THE-SONG video ever. I'm so bored. This one will be the last. And that makes me more frustrated that my last try turned out to be a failure.

The chinese letters in the beginning mean "BIG FAILURE".

By the way, why the fuck am I writing this brief? Does anybody check this blog? Why am I using english here?

Brazil (1985)

"Brazil"은 1985년도 Terry Gilliam이 감독을 맡고 Arnon Milchan의 제작 아래 만들어진 영화이다. 디스토피아적인 미래(사실 영화의 시간적 배경이 정확하게 묘사되지 않고 있어서 미래가 배경이라고 단정 짓기에는 모호한 감이 있다고 생각한다)를 배경으로 인간성이 상실 된 거대한 시스템에 어쩔 수 없이 반동하는 주인공의 분투를 그린 Sci-Fi 영화로 개봉 당시 유럽 쪽에서는 성공을 거두었지만, 북미 대륙에서는 그다지 좋은 반응을 얻지 못해 후에 컬트영화의 반열에 들었다고 한다.

컬트영화라고 불리게 된 이유는 아마도 이 영화의 블랙 코미디적인 요소들과 놀랄 정도로 세밀하게 묘사된 어두운 세계관이라는 상이한 두 요소의 절묘한 조화 덕분이 아닌가 싶다.

영화 "Brazil"의 포스터 (1985)

각본은 Terry Gilliam 외에 Tom Stoppard와 Charles McKeown이 공동 집필하였고, 미국에서의 배급은 "Universal Studio"에서, 유럽에서의 배급은 "20th Century Fox"에서 맡았다.
출연진으로는, 주인공인 Sam Lowry 역에 Jonathan Pryce가, Archibald "Harry" Tuttle 역에는 Robert De Niro, Jill Layton 역에는 Kim Greist가 등장한다.

Jonathan Pryce의 현재 모습과, 사실 그닥 큰 비중은 없는 Robert De Niro.

그 외의 눈여겨 볼 만한 배우로는, 후에 "반지의 제왕"에서 빌보 베긴스를 연기하게 되는 Ian Holm, Sam의 친구였으나 후에 갈라서게 되는 Jack Lint 역할에 Michael Palin, Central Services의 수리공 역에 Bob Hoskins(처음 봤을 때 대니 드비토가 아닌가 하고 착각을 했지만 조사를 해 보니 "누가 로저래빗을 모함했나"에 등장하는 형사 아저씨였다) 등이 있다.

주제곡처럼 사용되며 계속해서 되풀이되는 노래 "Aquarela do Brasil"의 의미는 "Watercolor of Brazil"이라고 하며, 브라질 출신의 1.작곡가이자 2.축구 해설가, 3.피아니스트, 4.TV와 라디오 쇼 프로그램 진행자인(!) Ary Barroso가 1939년에 작곡했다고 한다. 오프닝 시퀀스에서부터 엔딩 크레딧이 끝나는 순간까지 영화를 책임지고 있는 노래이다. 한편, 영화의 배경음악은 개인적으로 좋아했던 Michael Kamen이 맡고 있다.

2. 너무 일찍 세상을 떠난 Michael Kamen

위에서 언급한 것처럼 영화의 시간적 배경을 정확히 파악할 수는 없(다고 생각하)지만, 1985년을 기준으로 그다지 멀지 않은 미래를 배경으로 설정한 듯하다. 사회는 중앙 집권적인 거대 시스템에 의해 일률적으로 통제되고 있는 듯 하며, 체포당한 가족 구성원에 대한 "영수증"이 발부되는 것으로 보아 인간성도 상당히 상실된 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 아주 사소한 기계의(혹은 인간의) 실수로 인해, 테러리스트 용의자인 Archibald Tuttle이라는 인물 대신 Archibald Buttle이 체포되었고 사망하게 되는 사건이 발생한다.

모든 사건의 발단.

이 사건을 수습하려는 과정에서, 주인공인 Sam Lowry는 우연찮게 "진짜" Archibald Tuttle과 대면하게 되고, 그가 한 때는 Central Services에서 근무했으나 서류 절차를 견디지 못해 회사를 박차고 나온 일종의 반동분자라는 사실을 알게 된다. 또한 이 과정에서 Sam은 자신의 꿈에 계속해서 등장하는 환상의 여인 Jill을 마주치는데, 그녀는 이미 Information Retrieval에서 테러리스트 용의자로 지목당한 상태이다. 그녀를 돕고 싶은 마음과 자신의 여인으로 만들고 싶은 마음에 사로잡힌 Sam을 "도와줄" 수 있는 사람은 Mr. "Helpmann"뿐이다. Sam은 그를 찾아가(어머니와의 인맥을 이용해) Information Retrieval 부서로의 발령을 부탁하고, 그 곳에서 Jill의 신상정보를 얻는데 성공한다.

하지만 막상 직접 만나게 된 Jill은 그를 조금도 신뢰하지 않고, 그녀의 신뢰를 얻으면서 도우려는 일련의 과정에서 모든 상황은 조금씩 꼬여만 간다. Sam은 우여곡절 끝에 Jill의 신상정보를 Information Retrieval에서 삭제하고, 또한 그녀의 마음을 쟁취하는데 성공하지만 그는 이미 국가 기관에 반동하는 테러리스트로 낙인이 찍혀버린 상태였고, 체포당한다.

"Helpmann"의 "도움"도 그를 빼돌려 줄 수 없는 상황에서 Sam은 Jill이 저항하던 도중 사살당했다는 소식을 접하게 되고, 설상가상으로 그의 옛 친구인 Jack이 그를 직접 고문하러 오지만, 결정적인 순간에 "Harry" Tuttle이 Sam을 구하러 들이닥친다. 탈출에 성공하고 Information Retrieval 건물을 송두리째 날려버리는데 성공했지만, Tuttle이 눈앞에서 믿지 못할 원인으로 사라지는 사건을 시작으로 Sam은 환상 속에서 쫓기는 신세가 된다.

성형수술에 강박적으로 매달리던 그의 어머니는 어느새 Jill의 모습을 하고 있었고, 부작용에 시달리던 Mrs. Terrain은 끔찍한 모습의 시체가 되어 있었다. 꿈속에서나 보던 기이한 형태의 괴물들과 군인들에게 추격을 당하던 Sam은 필사적으로 도망치고, 정신을 차려보니 어느새 Jill이 운전하는 트럭 안에 있었다.

모든 것이 끝난 줄 알았다.

영화 전반을 지배하던 어두운 도시의 이미지에서 탈출하여 Jill과 함께 초원을 향해 도피하던 Sam이었지만, 사실 그는 이미 Jack의 고문으로 인해 정신이 나가버린 상태였고, Tuttle이 구조하러 오던 장면에서부터 모두 그의 환상이었던 것이다. 현실에서 도주하는 환상에 사로잡혀 노래 "Aquarela do Brasil"을 흥얼거리는 Sam을 뒤로한 채 Jack과 Mr. Helpmann은 고문실을 나선다.

사운드트랙 총평

"Brazil"을 두 번, 세 번 보면서 가장 강하게 받은 느낌은(비주얼적인 요소를 제외하고) 사운드가 단순히 영상을 뒷받침하는데 그치지 않고, 오히려 마치 보이지 않는 또 다른 등장인물인 것처럼 영화를 좌지우지하고 있다는 것이었다. 이것은 이 영화가 코믹한 요소들을 대폭 수용하고 있기 때문인 듯한데, 사운드와 영상의 연동성이 일반적인 영화보다 매우 높다고 생각한다. 특히, 몇몇 장면에서는 말 그대로 디즈니 만화영화를 연상시키는 Mickey-mousing 기법을 사용하고 있는데, (비록 Sam의 꿈에 불과한 장면들이지만)자주 보여지는 모험활극적인 영화의 특성을 잘 살리고 있다.

말 그대로 '짠'하고 등장한다.

첫째로 언급해야할 것 같은 사운드의 특징은, 정말 지겹도록 반복되는 "Aquarela do Brasil"를 이용한 Leitmotif 기법이다. 오프닝에서부터 등장하는 원곡은 상황에 맞게 편곡되어 때를 가리지 않고 과하다 싶을 정도로 계속 사용되는데, 심지어 절망적이고 긴박한 순간에마저 절망적이고 긴박하게 편곡되어 흐르는 것을 들을 수 있다. Dramatic Score로 사용되어 등장인물들이 인지하지 못하는 형태로 흐르는 것은 물론, Harry Tuttle이나 Sam이 흥얼거리는 Diegetic Sound의 형태로도 등장한다. 주로 평화로운 상황이나 Sam의 의지에 반대되지 않는 방향으로 사건이 전개될 때 들을 수 있지만, 위에서도 언급했듯이 '이렇게도 편곡이 가능하구나...' 싶은 장면도 간혹 있다.

Leitmotif로 "Aquarela do Brasil"이 사용되었다.

두 번째로, Dramatic Score과 영상의 Synchronization을 꼽을 수 있을 것이다. "Brazil"에서 대부분의 경우 Score가 화면에서 벌어지고 있는 상황에 어울리는 음악을 들려주는데, 간혹 Counterpoint 처럼 들리며 웃음을 유발하는 장면이 나오긴 하지만, 개인적으로는 오히려 영화 전반에 깔려있는 코믹한 요소들을 고려한다면 이 역시도 큰 흐름을 따르고 있다고 보는 것이 옳다고 생각한다. 많은 장면에서 Dramatic Score가 주로 영화의 내러티브를 강화시키고 있다.

긴박한 장면에서는 긴박한 음악이.

사운드의 가장 인상 깊었던 사용은 Sam과 Jill의 키스신에서 난데없이 터져 나오는 Score Music이었는데, 짓궂게 들리기도 하지만 그보다는 Sam의 뛰는 가슴과 일종의 성취감을 아주 잘 묘사했다고 생각한다. 그리고 이러한 영상과 음악의 사이좋은 연동은 더 나아가 Mickey-mousing, 그리고 많은 사운드트랙 요소들 사이의 밸런스에 영향을 끼친다고 본다. 예를 들어, Sam이 거대 무사와 진검승부를 벌이는 장면은 Mickey-mousing이 두드러지기도 하지만, Sound Effect와 Dramatic Score의 조화도 귀 기울여 들을 만 하다. 검을 휘두르거나 순간이동 등이 이루어질 때 효과음은 Score와 절묘하게 결합되어 전투의 긴박감을 높여주고 있다.

Diegetic Sound와 Dramatic Score의 조화?

개괄적으로 놓고 본다면, "Brazil"의 사운드트랙에서 가장 두드러지는 요소는 Dramatic Score이며, 이것이 나머지 사운드 요소들을 압도하는 경우가 많긴 하지만, 세밀한 묘사가 필요한 장면의 경우엔 다른 요소들과의 사이좋은 조화와 블렌딩을 들려주고 있는 것 같다.

Cue 2 "Department of Records"

"Department of Records" 부서로 출근을 하던 Sam이 옛 친구인 Jack과 우연히 마주치게 되는 장면이다. Jack과 부서에 관한 이야기를 나누던 도중 Sam은 꿈속의 여인 Jill의 모습을(cctv를 통해서지만) 처음으로 현실세계에서 보게 된다. 어안이 벙벙한 Sam에게 Jack은 계속해서 "Department of Records"에서 인생을 허비하고 있다며 걱정한다.

너나 잘 해라.

건물 안에서는 이미 잔잔한 선율이 흐르고 있다. 로비층이기 때문에 영화 속의 등장인물들인 오가는 사람들이 모두 들을 수 있는 Diegetic Sound인 동시에 Source Music이다. 이 선율은 Background Sound의 형태로 Sam과 Jack의 대화가 이루어지는 동안에도 계속되다가 Jill의 모습이 cctv에 처음 잡히는 순간부터 Segue 방식이 사용되며 조금씩 Score Music 형태로 변하기 시작한다. 마침내 Sam이 우연히 cctv를 쳐다보고 놀라는 순간부터 Non-diegetic Sound로 승화되고 동시에 Dramatic Score Music이 되어 Jill의 존재에 사로잡힌 Sam의 정신상태를 대변해준다.

Source Music에서 Dramatic Score로

영화 내내 흐르는 "Aquarela do Brasil"의 경쾌한 선율이 간단한 오케스트레이션으로 편곡되어 등장하는 Leitmotif 방식이지만, 놀란 Sam이 주위를 두리번거리면서 이내 불길한 음조로 짧게 마무리 되면서 무언가 좋지 않은 느낌을 받은 Sam의 정서를 대변한다. 정신을 차린 Sam이 Jack과의 대화를 재개하면서 다시 건물 로비에 이미 Score Music과는 상관없는 Source Music이 흐른다.

Cue 5 "Searching for Jill"

Jill을 찾기 위해 "Department of Records"에서 조사를 해 보지만 얻을 수 있는 정보에 한계가 있다는 것을 알고 좌절한 Sam이 퇴근하는 길에 대중교통 안에서 짧게 경험하는 환상을 다룬 장면이다. 이 환상 안에서 Jill은 정체를 알 수 없는 괴물들에게 납치당해 어디론가 끌려가고 있는 상황이고, Sam은 그녀를 구하기 위해 지상으로 내려와 검을 뽑는다.

검을 뽑았다.

대중교통 안의 사람들을 비춰줄 때 흐르는 음악은 Non-diegetic Sound, Dramatic Score Music으로, 아주 작은 Ambience Sound와 함께 들리지만 그보다 훨씬 전면에 부각되는 Foreground Sound이다. Sam의 독백이 흐르는 짧은 순간에 Background Sound가 되지만, 독백이 끝나고 환상이 시작되면서 다시 전면에 부각되기 시작한다. 환상이 시작되기 전까지의 색소폰 소리는(특히 80년대 영화에서 자주 사용된 방법이라고 생각하지만) 꿈의 여인을 갈망하는 Sam의 고독한 심정과 상황을 대변하고 있다.

고독한 색소폰 소리

Sam이 거대한 구조물들 사이를 날아다니면서 Score는 장엄한 오케스트레이션으로 변하고, 음악의 불길한 기운이 점차 고조되다가 Jill을 납치해 가는 괴물들의 모습이 확연히 드러나는 순간 절정에 달하게 된다(물론 이 scene에서의 모든 음악은 Non-diegetic이다). Ambience Sound로 바람소리가 작게 들리고, Jill이 Sam을 부르는 몽환적인 소리 역시 들을 수 있다.

Cut과 Score 사이의 Synch는 정확하게 떨어지지는 않지만 Sam이 날개를 접고 지상에 내려오는 순간에만큼은 정확히 맞춰 Score의 불길한 음조는 사라지고 "Aquarela do Brasil" 이 다시 한 번 장엄한 오케스트레이션으로 편곡되어(역시, Leitmotif의 사용) "구원자"로서의 Sam의 이미지를 돋보이게 한다. 괴물들과 대치하는 장면에서 음악은 다시 불길한 음조를 띄며 빠르게 절정을 향해 치닫기 시작하고, 장면의 긴장감을 극대화 시킨다. Sam이 단검을 빼들고 흔들기 시작하면(마치 마이크를 스피커에 들이 댔을 때 들을 수 있는 피드백 사운드같은) 다소 듣기 거북한 Sound Effect가 Score Music과 함께 고조된다.

Cut의 전환에 맞춰 Score도 변한다.

Sam이 현실로 다시 넘어오는 과정에서 Hard Cut이 사용되었다고 봐야 할지, 혹은 아닌지 정확하게 말 할 자신이 없다. 굳이 단정 짓자면 사용되지 않았다고 생각하는데, 완전히 다른 장면인 현실속의 열차 안으로 넘어가면서도 환상에서의 Sam의 고함이 메아리치면서 들리기 때문이다. Score Music역시 간단한 현악(?)으로의 갑작스러운 전환이 있기는 하지만 이전의 오케스트레이션에서 완전히 끊어지고 새롭게 시작하는 것이 아니라 어디까지나 전환이기 때문에 Hard Cut이라고 볼 수는 없다 생각한다.

현실로 돌아온 후에 잠시 Diegetic Sound는 들을 수 없다. Score Music이 조금 더 지속되다가, 벨소리를 시작으로 Ambience Sound가 전면에 부각되고 Score Music은 사라진다. Sam의 정신을 들게 하는 효과음으로 벨소리가 사용되었고 그와 동시에 환상의 여운은 흔적도 없이 사라지면서 삭막한 현실세계로 완전히 돌아오게 된다.

현실은 삭막하다.

Cue 7 "Welcome to the Team"

Information Retrieval 부서로 발령받은 Sam은 첫 출근을 하게 되고 Mr. Warrenn을 만나야 하지만 적막한 건물 안에는 아무도 없다. 마치 숨바꼭질을 하듯 여기저기에서 등장하는 한 무리의 사람들 가운데 드디어 Mr. Warrenn을 만나게 되고, 정신없이 바쁜 Mr. Warrenn은 그 와중에도 친절하게 Sam을 환영한다.

숨바꼭질

이 scene 안에서의 모든 음악 역시 Non-diegetic Sound이고, 전반적으로 Mickey-mousing과 Leitmotif의 사용이 두드러졌다고 생각한다. 우선 Sam이 엘리베이터를 타고 올라와 Mr. Warrenn을 만나기 전까지 Score Music은 뒤로 한 발 물러나 Background에서 흐른다. 엘리베이터의 문이 열리는 소리나, 텅 빈 복도 안에서 울리는 바람소리 같은 Ambience Sound등에 밀려있는 느낌이다.

음악 자체는 불길하지 않으면서도 어딘가 심상치 않은 분위기를 살려주고 있다(약간의 익살스러운 느낌도 받는다). Sam이 먼발치에서 보게 되는 Warrenn과 그를 둘러싼 사람들이 지나가는 찰나의 순간의 Diegetic Sound에 맞춰 Score는 변주된다(Mickey-mousing).

마침내 Warrenn과 마주하기 직전 Score는 긴장감을 고조시키고, 갑작스레 적막을 깨는 Dialogue가 들리면서 Score 역시 경쾌한 음악으로 전환된다. Warrenn과 Sam의 대화는 다른 사람들이 떠드는 말 속에 묻혀 정확하게 분간하기가 쉽지 않지만, Score Music을 뒤로 밀어낸 Foreground Sound이다.

무리가 걸어가면서 들을 수 있는 음악은 다소 변주되긴 했지만 Department of Records에서 직원들이 정신없이 돌아다니고, 근무하고 있을 때에도 들을 수 있었던 "Aquarela do Brasil"의 연주를 편곡한 음악이다. 즉, Leitmotif라고 할 수 있는데, 사용된 장면을 떠올리면 "정신없이 일하는 사람들의 theme" 정도 되는 것 같다. 사무실 외의 장면에서 "Aquarela do Brasil"이 사용되었을 경우에는 보컬의 멜로디 라인을 편곡한 것이기 때문이다. 점차로 고조되는 음악은 어딘가 정해진 목적지를 향해 가는 느낌을 주고 실제로 Sam은 Warrenn과 함께 그의 사무실 문 앞에 도달하게 된다.

Leitmotif

문 앞에서 Warrenn과 모든 사람들이 한 바퀴 돌고 멈추면서 음악은 잠시 소강상태로 들어가고, 사무실 문을 보여주는 컷에 맞춰 짧은 벨소리가 들린다. 멈춰있던 음악은 Sam을 제외한 모든 사람들이 다시 분주히 걸어감과 동시에 연주되기 시작하는데, 이 일련의 과정 역시 Mickey-mousing 기법이 사용되었다. 무리가 화면 프레임 밖으로 완전히 사라지면 Score 역시 익살스러운 마무리로 갑자기 종결된다. Mickey-mousing 기법이 짧으면서도 폭풍처럼 몰아치는 정신없는 장면을 극대화 시켰다고 생각한다.

걸음을 멈추면 음악도 멈춘다.

Cue 11 "The Kiss"

체포된 줄로만 알았던 Jill을 자신의 집 앞에서 다시 만나게 된 Sam은 그녀를 안전한 곳에 피신시켜 놓으려 한다. 크리스마스에 맞춰서 성형수술을 받으러 간 어머니의 빈 집에 Jill을 데려가고, 둘은 처음으로 키스를 하게 된다. Sam은 사건을 마무리하기 위해, 떠나지 말라는 Jill을 집에 남겨두고 어머니의 집을 나선다.

Score가 긴장감을 고조시킨다.

어머니의 집까지 가는 과정에서 들을 수 있는 음악과, 집 안에서 들을 수 있는 음악 모두 Non-diegetic Sound이자 Dramatic Score이다. 거리에서부터 시작해서, 집 안으로 들어올 때까지 Score는 Foreground Sound로 전면에 부각되며, Jill을 다그치는 Sam의 목소리와 발걸음 소리, 문을 여는 소리 등은 큰 비중을 차지하지 못한다. Score는 쫓기는 사람들의 심리를 대변하듯 긴장감을 고조시키고 있지만, 어머니의 집 안으로 들어오면 소강되고, 긴장감 역시 사라진다. 문을 닫는 Diegetic Sound를 시작으로 Dramatic Score는 Background로 물러나고, Dialogue와 Ambience Sound가 부각된다. Dramatic Score는 잘 들리지는 않지만 가느다란 현악으로 잔잔히 흐르다가 Sam과 Jill이 키스를 하는 장면에서 갑자기 Foreground Sound로 터져 나온다.

보통 영화와는 다르다.

"Aquarela do Brasil" 가 다시 한 번 Leitmotif 방식으로 사용되고 있는데, 재미있는 점은 일반적인 영화의 경우 로맨틱한 장면엔 잔잔한 선율이 부드럽게 흐르기 마련이지만, 이 장면에서 Dramatic Score는 아주 강렬하고 웅장하면서도 빠른 템포로 편곡되어 적막을 뚫고 등장한다. 영화 전반의 다소 익살스러운 분위기와도 잘 어울린다고 생각하는데, 꿈속의 여인과의 첫 키스에 터질 것 같은 Sam의 심정을 묘사하는데 효과적으로 사용된 것 같다.

하지만, 곧 Sam이 정신을 차린 듯 입을 엶과 동시에 Dramatic Score는 갑자기 멈추고, Sam의 대사만 들리게 된다. Sam과 Jill의 대화 도중 Score는 다시 좀 전의 잔잔한 선율로 Background Sound가 되고, 그마저도 Sam이 나가면서 문을 닫는 소리와 동시에 멈춘다(여기서 문을 닫는 소리는 Diegetic Sound인 동시에 Off-Screen Sound이다).

정신차림과 동시에 음악도 멎는다.

자신의 극적인 탈출을 도와 준 Harry가 알 수 없는 원인으로 사라지게 된 것을 시작으로, Sam은 군인들에게 쫓기는 환상에 시달리게 된다. 성형 부작용으로 인해 결국 저세상으로 가게 된(!) Mrs. Terrain의 장례식에서, 그를 도와줄 수 있는 몇 안되는 사람들 중 한 명인 어머니를 마주하지만, 그녀는 어쩐 일인지 Jill의 얼굴을 하고 젊은 남자들과 노닥거리느라 아들을 냉대한다.
장례식장에까지 들이닥친 군인들과 대치하던 중 Mrs. Terrain의 관 속으로 쓰러진 Sam은 이전의 환상에서 계속 보던 괴물들과 군인들에게 쫓겨 막다른 골목에 몰리게 되고, 현실에서 자신을 그렇게도 괴롭혔던 배관들 사이를 기어올라 벽에 있는 문 안으로 들어가는데 성공한다. 문을 닫고 정신을 차려보니 어느새 Jill이 운전하고 있는 트럭에 타 있었고 안도하지만, 사실 그는 이미 Helpmann과 고문하려던 Jack 앞에서 정신줄을 놓아버린 것이었다.

자식이고 나발이고

전반적으로 Dramatic Score가 Diegetic Sound를 압도하는 scene이다. 간헐적으로 인물들의 대사나 On-Screen Sound가 들리긴 하지만 주도권을 쥐지는 못한다. 또한 장면의 전환 등에 맞추어 Dramatic Score와의 Synchronization이 상당히 강하게 이루어지고 있다.

군중을 뚫고 등장하는 군인 소리와 함께 Dramatic Score가 Foreground에서 들리기 시작한다(아주 잠깐이지만 스릴있게 변주된 "Aquarela do Brasil"의 멜로디가 들린다). 군인들의 무전기, 혹은 확성기에서 들리는 소리도 있지만 비중이 크지는 않고, 이내 장면이 바뀌면 그마저도 들리지 않게 된다. Sam이 거리를 뛰어가는 장면으로 전환됨과 동시에 Score도 변하는데, 긴장감을 유발하는 듯 하다가 골목을 빠져나와 성당으로 추정되는 거대한 건물을 마주하는 순간 다시 한 번 Leitmotif로 "Aquarela do Brasil"을 들을 수 있다.

쫓기는 장면에서도 "Aquarela do Brasil"이 들린다.

쫓기는 느낌은 사라지고 성당의 문이 열리면서 몽환적인 느낌의 Dramatic Score가 들리지만, Spiro의 대사가 나오면서 뒤로 물러나게 된다. 이 장면에서의 Score는 실제 장례식장에서 볼 수 있는 파이프 오르간(확실하진 않다)으로 연주되고 있지만, Source Music은 아닌 것 같다. 화면 어디에도 악기나 그것을 연주하고 있는 연주자가 보이질 않는 점으로 볼 때 Source Scoring이 아닌 단순 Dramatic Score인 것 같다. 장례식장의 차분하고 성스러운 분위기를 잘 살리고 있다.

Sam과 어머니의 대화는 두 가지 다른 양상을 띈다. Sam의 목소리는 Dramatic Score를 압도하며 완전히 Foreground Sound로 작용하고 있는 반면, 어머니의 목소리는 몽환적으로 울리면서 Score의 일부처럼 녹아들고 있다. Sam이 보고 듣고 있는 것들이 환상에 지나지 않는다는 것을 강조하는 듯 하다.

곧 Score를 압도하는 파열음(Diegetic Sound)이 터져 나오고 군인들의 등장에 맞추어 Score가 다시 긴박하게 변하며 Foreground로 나선다. Ambience Sound도 없고, 군인의 확성기에서 나오는 경고성 메시지와 Mrs. Terrain의 관이 떨어지는 소리 정도만 Diegetic Sound로 들릴 뿐이다. Dramatic Score는 컷의 전환이나 화면 구성 요소의 움직임에 어느 정도 Synchronization이 이루어지고 있는데, 특히 관이 떨어지면서 Terrain의 시신이 쏟아질 때 Diegetic Sound와 함께 Score 역시 극적인 전환이 이루어진다.

악기나 연주자가 보이지 않는다.

Sam이 관 안으로 쓰러지면서 추락할 때 지르는 비명소리가 들리면 곧 추락, 혹은 극도의 혼란을 암시하는 Sound Effect가 잠시 나오고, 골목에서의 추격이 재개되면 한동안 Diegetic Sound는 전무한 상태로 Dramatic Score만이 Sam이 처한 상황과 그의 심리를 대변한다. 괴물들과 부랑자들이 나타나면 곧 그들이 내는 것 같은 소리가 들리지만 사실은 Score의 일부(라고 생각한)다. 군악대의 행진곡에서나 들을 법 한 잘게 끊어 치는 드럼소리가 긴장감을 고조시키고 있다. Sam이 문을 열기 직전 듣고 놀라 뒤를 돌아보게 하는 비명 같은 소리를 제외하면 Dramatic Score에 의해 지배당하고 있는 장면이다.

Dramatic Score 외엔 들리지 않는다.

Sam이 문을 닫고 막으려 하는 장면부터 Ambience Sound와 Sam이 짧게 내뱉는 비명소리가 조금씩 들리기 시작한다. 트럭의 엔진이 돌아가는 소리와 커튼을 올리는 소리 등의 Diegetic Sound가 오랜만에 들리며 뿌옇고 답답한 느낌의 환상을 탈출하여 현실로 돌아왔다는 상쾌하고 맑은 느낌을 준다. Score 역시 긴장감의 여운은 남아있지만, 불길한 음조는 모두 걷어내고 장엄한 분위기를 풍기다가 커튼 사이로 Jill의 얼굴을 확인하는 순간 웅장하면서도 희망찬 느낌으로 변한다. 넓고 길게 펼쳐진 산길이 화면에 나오면 다시 한 번 "Aquarela do Brasil"이 웅장한 현악으로 편곡되어 흐르면서 Happy Ending을 암시하지만, 영화의 마지막 반전으로 Helpmann과 Jack의 얼굴이 프레임 안으로 등장하면서 음악은 급격히 전환되어 Sound Effect에 가까운 효과를 내며 사라진다.

Sam은 Information Retrieval로 가기 싫다며 자신의 일에 참견하지 말라고 어머니에게 화를 낸다. 다시 한 번 하늘을 날아다니는 꿈을 꾸게 되고, 아름다운 모습의 Jill에게 거의 다가갔다 싶은 순간 갑자기 지표면을 뚫고 무수히 많은 거대한 기둥들이 솟아오르기 시작한다. Jill은 당황해서 Sam의 이름을 외치고 Sam은 중심을 잃고 퍼덕이던 도중 기둥에 삼켜져 버리고 만다. 악몽에서 깨어난 Sam은 온통 땀으로 축축하게 젖어있다.

엄마한테 땡깡부린다.

Diegetic Sound와 Dramatic Score가 잘 조화를 이루고 있다고 생각한다. 초반의 Ambience Sound인 바람소리와 Sam을 부르는 Jill의 몽환적인 목소리는 잔잔한 현악으로 편곡 된 "Aquarela do Brasil"과 함께 어우러져서 아름다운 꿈의 한 장면에 녹아있다.

첫 번째 기둥이 뚫고 나오면서 들을 수 있는 파열음을 시작으로 Score 역시 급격한 전환을 맞게 되는데, 특이한 것은 Diegetic Sound인 파열음과 Dramatic Score 중에서 어느 쪽이 압도하고 있다고 말하기가 애매하다는 점이다. 첫 파열음이 들림과 동시에 웅장한 스케일로 편곡 되는 "Aquarela do Brasil"이 조금도 뒤로 물러나지 않은 채 당황스러우면서도 긴박한 상황을 대변하는 한편, 멈추지 않고 계속 솟아오르는 기둥이 지표면을 뚫을 때 들리는 엄청난 소리 역시 이에 질세라 관객을 압도한다.

특히 이 파열음은 Sam의 환상과 현실의 경계를 깨버릴 듯한 기세로 터져 나오는데, 거의 들리지 않을 정도로 묻혀있는 Sam을 부르는 Jill의 메아리치는 목소리만이 이 장면이 현실이 아닌 환상이라는 것을 암시한다. 전자오락에서나 들을 수 있을 법한 Sound Effect가 파열음에 묻혀 작게 들리는 도중, Sam이 침대 위에서 뒤척이는 장면으로 전환이 되며 Score는 사라지지만, 지표면의 파열음은 Background Sound로 한 발 물러나 한동안 더 지속되면서 Sam이 꿈과 현실의 경계에서 괴로워하는 모습을 뒷받침한다.

현실이 꼬여갈수록 Sam이 꿈에서 처한 상황 역시 첩첩산중이 되어간다. Central Services의 직원들이 앙심을 품고 Sam의 집을 엉망으로 만들어 놓은 날 밤, Sam은 거대 일본 무사와 진검승부를 펼치는 꿈을 꾸게 된다. 혈투 끝에 적을 쓰러뜨리는데 성공하지만, 무사의 가면 뒤의 얼굴은 바로 Sam 본인의 얼굴이었다.

Diegetic Sound와 Sound Effect가 Dramatic Score와 어우러져서 Mickey-mousing의 효과를 내고 있다. Sam이 뒤돌아 거대 무사의 모습을 확인하는 순간 일본의 타악기로 연주한 것으로 추정(...)되는 효과음과 Dramatic Score가 동시에 터져 나온다. Dramatic Score는 전면에 배치되어 탈을 쓴 괴물들과 Sam이 외치는 고함소리를 압도한다.

Sam이 밧줄을 끊으려다 망설이는 장면에서 Score는 잠시 Background로 물러나고, 공간에서 들리는 듯한 바람소리와 Mrs. Buttle의 목소리가 전면에 배치되어 몽환적으로 울리면서 들린다. 이어서 거대 무사의 분노한 듯한 비명소리와 Sound Effect, Dramatic Score가 한데 어우러지면서 Mickey-mousing 기법을 사용한다. Score는 연주를 멈추기도 하고, 소강상태에 들어가기도 하지만 사무라이와 Sam의 큼직한 행동이 있을 때면 Sound Effect와 함께 움직임에 철저히 동기화 된 소리를 들려준다. Sam이 내뱉는 비명과 고함은 검과 창이 부딪히는 소리보다 작게 들리며 큰 비중을 차지하지 못하고 있다.

중반에 사라졌던 거대 무사가 다시 등장하는 장면부터 Sam에게로 천천히 걸어가는 장면까지가 이 scene에서 Mickey-mousing의 절정이라고 생각한다. 한걸음씩 뗄 때마다 Diegetic Sound와 Score가 화면에 정확히 동기화되어 긴장감을 극대화시킨다. 이어지는 전투 장면부터는 Sound Effect, Diegetic Score가 전면에 배치되고, Dramatic Score는 Background로 한 발 물러나 분위기를 표현하는 정도의 역할을 맡는다.

거대 무사가 가슴에서 불을 뿜으며 비명을 지르는 장면에서, 타오르는 불을 암시하는 효과음과 무사의 비명소리가 극대화되고 Dramatic Score는 거의 들리지 않을 정도가 되지만, 가면을 벗기고 Sam이 자신의 얼굴을 확인하는 순간 Score는 효과음에 가까울 정도의 괴이한 소리를 내며 모든 소리를 압도한다. 벨소리에 놀라 꿈을 깨는 장면으로의 전환은 Hard Cut으로 이루어진다.

진짜 미키도 울고 갈 것같다.

Repetitions / Coming Full Circle

There's nothing worng with this video, so keep watching it even though you feel like it's finished. And I feel like this is the biggest piece of crap that I have ever made. It's sooooooooo boring.

What I wanted to say in this video was that there's no escape from this repetition in visual and temporal ways. Some kind of eternity happens indoor. So it's another way of distorting time.

Technically as you can see, I have almost nothing to say. Just want to mention that I put 50 layers for the last scene. Used 'Garage Band' to create those silly sounds.

Concept :

Display 4 different scenes in one screen, but the sound from each scene controls the boundaries. The louder sound is, then the bigger a scene becomes. The boundaries are not drawn in straight lines but in curves to get some kind of "organic boundaries" looking image.

Motivations of this idea were from the works of Urs Fischer and David Hockney. They made montage images using different pictures from different angle and perspective. So those images can show us different aspects of a space existing at a certain moment. My idea is to convert these concepts into a video work.

BUT, that would be just stealing someone else's idea using slightly different media. So why don't we let the sound from each scene control the whole image?

Well, actually there is not much I can say about method. I'm just considering to use Max Msp or Quartz Composer which I'm not good at. If they can combine 4 different scenes into one image and create the boundaries reacting to the sound, well then...that's it! We must have 4 cameras and mics connected to computer so those programs can control the whole image. Each camera and mic has to be located in different places to have 4 different sources(one camera and one mic make a unit).

I'm not sure about displaying screen either. We can just use one projector toward a big screen, or we can connect 24(!!) mini-LCDs with the main computer. But as you know, we are not sure about dividing an image into 24 pieces using just one computer...let's think about that.

Horror and Media

The first project of this semester was about "the modification of an environment ( or situation ) in a very immediate way". I tried to modify few situations in my house without knowing what I was trying to do.

Then I realized that one of my videos from last semester was related with this project in some way. It was about distorting time, but I guess somehow it also distorted environment.

And this image reminded me of the video game called "The 7th Guest" which was released in 1993. It was a horror adventure game that trying to solve the mysteries inside a huge mansion. And accidentally by the time I was on this project, I was playing the video game called "Bio Hazard" which was also a horror adventure zombie killing game inside a mansion.

These video games had great amount of tensions that player can feel inside mansion, so they were all about "interior horror". Of course monsters come out occasionally, but player spends most of the time alone in the domestic environment. So with these two games reminded, my works on the project became horror.

The loading screen of Bio Hazard was the best part of the game. When player opens the door or goes downstairs, you can only hear the footsteps or a creaking sound from the door. And it changes it's point of view into first person's. So I tried to imitate that.

I made couple more videos trying to express static fear inside house. And finally, with an intension to express the suicidal tendency, I threw my camcorder from 23rd floor...just to fail to revive that video tape.

After these "fear inside" things, project was changed and I brought camera out to the streets. I shooted the original source in the construction area where I could get a great depth of space. I admit that I was obsessed with video filters and effects regarding these street videos. But a few filters were good for expressing bizarre illusions and they reminded me of environments from Marilyn Manson's music videos. Well, it's just my opinion. It doesn't really matter what you think!

Ok...I'm starting to confuse...where was I ??
In trying to make portraits, I couldn't make 3-4 different videos. I just made one simple video which I wanted to express distorted time, body modification, sound reacting horror video. Looking toward an eye very closely is often used to give some tensions. The movie "Requiem for a dream" used it, the title screen of Bio Hazard used it also. Why not me?

Circuit Bending & Visuallization

This project was about visuallizing sound. Not just songs or sound that we normally hear from daily life, but some kind of sounds we can controll and distort. So, here comes the "Speak & Spell".

It was not this model that I used, but I forgot to take a picture of it before I destroy it, and I couldn't find the image of right one. It's shape was a craB.

Anyway, I took off craB's shell and tried to modify it's circuit. I had to find which part of the circuit is right for connecting resistance to controll the sound, and I had to test almost every parts of it! It really took a long time, 7 different resistances were tested and two craBs were sacrificed.

1. It looks very peaceful now, but there was a time that I wanted to destroy this.
2. 100k resistance.

There was another problem. I couldn't controll the sound. Of course the sound was distorted with the resistance, but I could not change the speed and pitch with resistance. Yes, this project was about visuallizing sound but also I should be able to controll it and I failed. However, we were supposed to use any kind of sound programs also, so I kindly let computer deal with this problem.

I connected my circuit with the program Ableton Live and it resulted great sound for me(Sorry, but I don't know how to record the sound from ableton so I cannot upload it here...you can follow the screen shot if you want). Tried many different patches and those four were chosen. With these patches, I could controll the sound by turning on / off the circuit.

So the sound part was pretty much done. In visuallizing it, I decided to use Quartz Composer.

I have to make a confession here, that I used one of the open sources for quartz composer from web. The excuses are :

1. I didn't know how to use Quartz Composer.
2. I don't know how to use Quartz Composer yet. My brain doesn't react to these kind of processing programs.
3. I was in a boundless ocean.
4. ......

So I downloaded one of the sources and those are screen shots of it. Of course I didn't use this patch as it is. I tried to modify it as possible to fit it into the circuit's distorted sound.
Here are few tryouts.

I was able to change the number of lines, color, saturation, and mirror effect. I also removed the grid from background and adjusted the level of increasement / decreasement. The biggest change was happened in the motion. While the original shape of object was 2D expanding circle panel (and camera was moving around to make this patch 3D), changed object was able to twist iteself in 3D. When the sound is louder, I could get more twisted and expanded object image.

With increasing / decreasing scales modified, I could get just clear black screen without any objects when there was no sound. And also object reacted more sensitivly to the sound resulting a very dynamic image on the screen.

And finally, we had our performance at Yonsei open theater. We had two projectors so we could have mirror image. It was freezing outside.

God damn it, that was a long brief...

Ok...I tried this "deshake" plug-in...Did it work? Certainly did, but due to the "mov & avi conversion" thing, resolution dropped down dramatically... And for that reason, I had to crop or distort the images... So qualities of these videos are very poor. Anyway, the plug-in DID work even though some videos don't really look like it worked, and VIRTUALDUB only exports out files with HUGE amount of size.

Oh, one more thing. These vids are set to 720p but still...qualities are VERY bad...due to the "mov & avi conversion" thing.

In this video, I wanted to express the feeling of kid who was lying on the bed and frightened of something invisible(but you can see a man moving in this video). I thought that kind of feeling is the most typical fear that one can feel in his own house(and I guess almost everybody had felt that kind of fear when they were kid).

In a TV series 'Twin Peaks' which was directed by David Lynch, ghosts speak in a very scary way. Their voices were reversed and they sounded like something is being swallowed. That reversed sound was my biggest fear when I was kid, so I also reversed the speed of this video(not just sound) to express that fear.

I didn't have any inspiration for this video. Just wanted to make some short clip that looks like something is moving(or working) by itself without anybody controlling it. I guess I tried to make clips about certain place that doesn't feel right. But in this clip, you can barely feel the depth of place.

The sound of clock ticking was recorded later and pasted to this clip. I wanted to tell that while everything barely moves and nobody is in that place, there is something keeps moving by itself.

I tried to express the strange sight of invisible creature that lives in someone's house. Twisted camera's angle by 90 degrees and turned on nightshot mode. Then reversed the speed of sound cause this thing might feel the speed of time differently(nobody knows).

These are loading screens from the horror-zombie killing-no mercy video game 'Bio hazard'. When user opens the door or goes downstairs, these screen come up without any sound but footsteps. This first person point of view gives so much tensions to player. And I was motivated by this first person point of view. But I expressed the view of unknown creature not that of player(or normal human).

Just a test. I didn't use msp or any kind of interactive programs here yet. Just put 4-5 layers with different speed and changed opacity. This doesn't react to the sound neither.

FLOW - fourth week : what's going on?

I wanted to do this time-flow project in real time with some interactive programs. Camera will be fixed and shooting an empty space where people can walk around. Then it will be projected in two way on the same screen with opacity downed - One will be in real time and the other's speed will be slowed down. Camera has to be fixed so when these two videos are piled up, they can look like one video. Slowed one's speed will become faster reacting to the sound. Viewers can make noise to see the past and present of time simultaneously. They will see what's happening and what happened. This was my first plan.

But using interactive programs(like max msp, isadora, or quartz composer) will be almost impossible. Computer has to capture and save video clips during unlimited time and also will have to run the interactive program to project it. All these processes has to be done at the same time FOR UNLIMITED TIME. This is what I heard. I don't have a super computer.

I can still use interactive programs but final output is not going to be real time installation. Have to decide what to shoot. And in this case, more layers(with different speed) will be better to see. Ideas still have to be developed......

In this video, camera never stops(as car never stops). Maybe that's one reason why this video seems not working as I thought. And I didn't calculated decibel and speed correctly. Space will be a big part of this project I guess.

FLOW - second week : conversions

Concept : I was always interested in the relationship between music and image. That is like my ultimate theme. So with this "FLOW" project, I changed my mind and decided to make some sound based movie again. (what a breaking news)

I came up with sound wave(graph for decibel). While my former ideas(injecting blue ink and spraying blue water) were about material flow, sound wave is not material form. It is physical, but untouchable. Its about the high and low of decibel from music or any kind of sounds, so it has nothing to do with regular rhythm.
I'm not sure if sound wave is considered as a flow or not. This work is not based on existing material flow. The main concept is to CREATE a time flow. Amount will be converted to speed.

Method : The high and low of decibel will be applied as the moving speed of images. If its high (which means loud), then images will move fast. If its low, they slow down.There will be a standard between high and low decibels that matches with 100% speed of moving images so I can have not only faster movements but also slower moves.

It's not decided yet what kind of sound will be used. But I'm thinking of the song "The Perfect Drug" by Nine Inch Nails. And of course, few songs by my all time favorite band The Prodigy.

With this "LED balls", I also tried to record the flow of water. But like you already know, it didn't work as I thought. Just a few photos could catch the images of flow(I can still develop something from this idea).

Anyway, here's what I'm gonna try this time.

A. Inject blue ink or blue oil in water. Shoot it in different angles when ink spreads inside water. Capture that video and mix it with another movie using 'matte' or 'chroma key' or whatever.

B. Dye water with blue acrylic color. A fan is needed to make wind. Spray the blue water in front of fan and shoot it in slow or high shutter speed. Then again, capture it and mix it with another video. I expect very shatterd images of movie with this method.

Before I did that graffiti under the bridge, we (me and my friend "fukka") were looking for more meaningful place to paste our work. We came up with Berlin wall at Jong-ro, but historically it was too important to mess up. So I just made another couple of images using photoshop.

These are another "testing" works for transparent graffiti. The idea was to draw pictures on glass or window instead of vinyl, so those pix can be matched with real environment when watched at certain spot. This idea was used in a movie (For Love Or Money, 1993).

After video clip was done, I downloaded demo version of ISADORA and tried to make a sound-interactive video. It worked well and I was satisfied with result EXCEPT ONE THING.

The demo version of Isadora was able to put out the video to another device only for 10 seconds. And it couldn't be recorded neither. I only could capture some part of the clip without the sound.

As you can see here, LED circuit was supposed to be in between the camera and television. But after trying some kind of light flashing effect, I thought that just flashing lights will not make any huge changes in screen. So i decided to make a short music video first using televsion feedback images as sources, and after that interactivity thing will be put using program (ISADORA).

Final Project - part 3 : camera connected to television

At first, I tried to use a beam projector, shooting it on the surface of television while that television is displaying same feature with projector. To show same movie in slightly different time was my purpose, so i could have some kind of traces.

But, the beam wasn't strong enough to see the feature from the projector when it was displayed on the bright tv screen, and I could only see the image from tv.

So I gave up using projector and decided to connect dv cam directly to tv.

I tried to shot two different images with same motion, one using that black paper with a hole. And put them together to have some kind of time lag image. Didn't work out that well I think, and after seeing this, professor David Hall suggested to use a projector for time lag images.

When I was doing this, I was really confused about differences between (in-camera effects) and (post-camera effects). I just didn't know what to do. So I attached a black paper which has a small hole in middle on camera lens, and used digital effect (solarize). The results looked like having 3-4 layers. But they have nothing to do with motions.
